Your Questions, Answered

  • We raise Lagotto Romagnolo and Portuguese Water Dogs. Both breeds are intelligent, active, and very people-oriented dogs that thrive when they are part of the family. While they share some similarities, each breed has its own unique personality and characteristics, and we are happy to help families decide which breed may be the best fit for their lifestyle.

  • We are located in southern Wisconsin. Our dogs are raised in a hands-on, home environment where they receive daily interaction, training, and socialization from the very beginning.

  • No. We do not ship puppies. All families must come in person to pick up their puppy. This gives us the opportunity to meet you and allows you to see where your puppy was raised and how they spent their first weeks of life.

Our puppies live with families all across the United States, and many families make a trip out of coming to pick up their puppy.

  • The first step is to fill out our puppy application. This helps us learn more about your household, lifestyle, and what you’re looking for in a dog.

If it looks like a good match, we will follow up and talk more about timing and upcoming litters.

  • Many families apply several months to a year in advance of when they hope to bring a puppy home. Because we only have a limited number of litters each year, our waitlist can fill quickly. If you are interested in a puppy from us, we recommend reaching out early so we can talk about timing and upcoming plans.

  • We match puppies based primarily on temperament and personality, coat color is our last consideration.

As the puppies grow, we spend time observing their behavior, energy levels, confidence, and overall personality. This allows us to match each puppy with the home where they will thrive.

While we absolutely take preferences into account (such as color or gender), the best match for the puppy and family always comes first.

  • Many people naturally fall in love with a photo of a specific puppy. However, that puppy might not actually be the best fit for their home. For example, that puppy might grow up to be the most vocal, the most independent, or the most energetic in the litter.

Because we spend every day with the puppies, we are able to guide the placement process to help ensure long-term success for both the puppy and the family.

  • We consider many factors, including:

    • Energy level

    • Confidence

    • Curiosity

    • Independence vs. snuggly personality

    • Food and toy motivation

    • Sensitivity to new environments

    • Household lifestyle and activity level

    • Whether the family wants a companion dog, sport prospect, or training partner

Our goal is to create a long-term match that works for both the puppy and the family.

  • Yes. The health of our dogs is extremely important to us. Our breeding dogs undergo breed-appropriate health testing before being included in our program.

This testing may include evaluations such as hips, eyes, and genetic screening per the recommendations of the Lagotto Club of America and the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America.

  • Our breeding program is built on three core principles: health, temperament, and lifelong support for our puppies and their families.

We carefully select our breeding dogs for excellent health testing, sound structure, and wonderful temperaments. Just as important, our puppies are raised in a hands-on, enriched environment where they receive daily interaction, early socialization, and exposure to normal household life.

Training is also a big part of our philosophy. Because of our background in dog training, we place a strong emphasis on raising puppies that are confident, thoughtful, and prepared for life with their new families.

Finally, we stay connected with our puppy families and are always happy to provide guidance as their puppy grows. Our goal is not just to place puppies, but to build long-term relationships with the people who welcome them into their homes.

  • We typically have a limited number of litters each year. This allows us to focus on the health and well-being of our dogs and to give each litter the time and attention they deserve.

Because of this, puppies are often reserved well in advance, and we encourage interested families to join our waitlist early.

  • While we appreciate the beautiful variety of coat colors in both breeds, color is never our top priority when planning litters.

Health, temperament, and pedigree always come first. When placing puppies, we match families primarily based on personality and lifestyle fit, though we absolutely consider color preferences whenever possible.

  • Both breeds are often considered low-shedding and may be a good option for people with mild allergies. However, no dog is truly hypoallergenic, and allergy sensitivity can vary from person to person.

If allergies are a concern, we always recommend spending time around the breed before making a final decision

  • Early socialization is a very important part of raising confident, well-adjusted dogs. Our puppies are raised in a hands-on environment where they experience daily interaction with people, normal household activity, and a variety of age-appropriate enrichment experiences.

As they grow, we introduce them to different surfaces, sounds, environments, and gentle handling, helping them build confidence and curiosity about the world around them.

  • Yes, all of our puppies are sent home with a health certificate by a veterinarian. They get a puppy exam, their first set of vaccines, dewormed (if needed) and are microchipped. They are also seen by a certified canine ophthalmologist and are sent home with an eye exam report.

  • Yes. The litter is registered with the American Kennel Club and you are sent home with the paperwork to register your puppy individually if you choose to.

Raising well-bred puppies involves far more than simply producing a litter. Our program prioritizes health, temperament, structure, and lifelong support for our puppies and their families. Before a dog is ever considered for breeding, they undergo extensive health testing appropriate for the breed.

Our puppies are raised in a hands-on home environment where they receive daily interaction, early socialization, and age-appropriate enrichment. Because of our background in dog training, we also focus on helping puppies develop confidence, curiosity, and a solid foundation for life with their new families.

    Each puppy goes home with:

    • Veterinary health check

    • Age-appropriate vaccinations

    • Deworming

    • Early socialization and enrichment

    • Ongoing breeder support

We are committed to every puppy we produce for their entire lifetime and are always available to support our puppy families as their dogs grow.

If you are interested in learning more about upcoming litters or joining our waitlist, we encourage you to reach out and start a conversation with us.

  • The first weeks of a puppy’s life play an important role in shaping their confidence, curiosity, and ability to adapt to the world around them. Because of our background in dog training, we place a strong emphasis on giving our puppies a thoughtful and structured start in life.

Our puppies are raised in a hands-on home environment where they receive daily interaction, gentle handling, and age-appropriate enrichment as they grow.

We begin introducing potty training around 3 weeks of age and early crate training at approximately 4 weeks of age. These early experiences help puppies become familiar with routines and give them a strong foundation before going to their new homes.

Of course, when puppies leave for their families they are still very young and are going through one of the biggest transitions of their lives. It is completely normal for puppies to have a little regression at first as they adjust to a new environment, new people, and a new routine. The early training simply gives them a great starting point to build on.

Throughout their time with us, puppies are also exposed to a variety of experiences designed to build confidence and curiosity, including:

    • Daily human interaction and gentle handling

    • New surfaces and environments

    • Household sounds and normal activity

    • Age-appropriate toys and enrichment

    • Early exposure to crates and structured routines

Our goal is to send home puppies that are confident, thoughtful, and well-prepared for life with their new families.

For families who would like an extra head start, we also offer an extended Puppy Boot Camp program where puppies stay a little longer and continue working on foundational skills before going home.
